Addressing 5 Common Project-Based Learning Challenges

Good morning, wonderful educators and lifelong learners. Because who is not curious to learn PBL (Project-Based Learning)? If you have ever witnessed students grow excited to take control of their own learning, PBL is the answer. However, as with any great adventure, it has its pitfalls. Well, have no fear, because we love taking them on with great excitement and a touch of magic! ✨

Challenge 1: Time Management: The Ultimate Juggling Act

the excitement of setting out on a new venture! It becomes mind-numbingly apparent that, oh my god, there is just SO much shit to get done, but what?! I am always walking that fine line when it comes to time management in PBL. It feels like juggling 12 flaming torches while riding a unicycle. But guess what? It can be done, and it will retain its value for sure.

Solution: Break it down! The answer is creating short and manageable milestones. Every small win helps keep momentum rolling and makes the project less of a mountainous task for both you and your children. Use tools such as Gantt charts or simple checklists to help keep everyone on track. And your superpower is flexibility. Occasionally, and perhaps paradoxically, it is the most circuitous of routes that offers us our greatest opportunities to learn. πŸš€

Challenge 2: Enthusiasm: Igniting the Fires of Curiosity

If you are like me, I am always aiming to get all my students as keen on learning dinosaurs (or whatever subject it is) as we are! Unfortunately, in some cases, not all students are on board with this project. Perhaps the topic isn’t immediately appealing to them, or they don’t know how to start digging.

Answer: Link the project to their world! Brainstorm strategies for relating the theme of your project to students’ own excitement, curiosity, and personal experience. Trust them with the vision of where this project will goβ€”it is now partially communal! Give them the opportunity to own it, and then let that little light turn into a wildfire of passion. With the most recent project I facilitated, it felt as if my students had become true innovators that were changing the world. 🌍

Challenge 3: Collaboration Chaos: Navigating Teamwork Turbulence

Teamwork makes the dream work, but even getting teamwork out of a team often finds you hurting cats, no? While collaboration in PBL is outstanding, it also exposes the softer underbelly of group dynamics: unequal workloads and contributions, differing ideas or approaches to problems, even how people can most effectively collaborate together.

Alignment: Build collaboration skills in the project! Get your team together and do some fun stuff to encourage bonding, while trying to define rolesβ€”this will come back a little more later. Those wanting open dialog and input champion everyone having a voice. Check-ins on a regular basis can keep things moving as expected and help resolve problems before they become issues. It is also important to celebrate successes, however small, and even more importantly, success in acting as a team. It is not a good sign of learning. πŸŽ‰

Episode 4: Assessment Uncertainty Challenge #5: How do you measure success out of formal tests?

Literally, how does one measure project success when it is not a test score? PBL involves creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and real-world application. How on earth can we assess this?

Remedy: You should start following diverse assessments! Design rubrics that focus on various facets of the project: collaboration, innovation, research, presentation, as well as reflection. Self-assessment and peer feedback are also very useful for students since they get the opportunity to reflect on their learning process. After all, PBL is about learning more than anything else, so celebrate their journey and acknowledge that they are moving forward. 🌱

Challenge 5: Resource Management: Have the right tools and materials

The tools of the trade for any epic project are essential, but seem a bit like needing to find them throughout uncharted lands as would be in some sort of scavenger hunt. Limited budgets, where to find the right materials, or even just how and what is near impossible for some

Answer: Think outside the box with how you use your resources. Use technology, rely on your connections in the community, and help students think creatively. When you are very lucky, some of the weirdest stuff can get a result. NOTE: And, remember, PBL is all about problem solving; so include your students in the collecting aspect. Maybe they have brilliant new ideas? 🌟

The adventure awaits! 🌟

Fearless educators, here are five challenges of project-based learning slain with your gusto and enthusiasm!
